This studio takes place in the Brussels Canal Zone. Through the lens of Gilbert & George, we explore the area on foot. A series of walks is documented and becomes the basis for selecting two sites for intervention.

Why these two places?

Gilbert & George, The General Jungle or Carrying on Sculpting (1971).

Perhaps the connection is familial: two Pakistani brothers, one running a kebab shop, the other a second-hand car garage. Perhaps they are two vacant plots of exactly the same width. Two squatted buildings with an industrial past, coincidentally both occupying a corner. Or two mirrored houses facing each other from opposite sides of the canal.

The relationship may be obvious or accidental, spatial or social, factual or constructed. What matters is that the two sites begin to speak to one another. After closely observing and documenting what is already there, the two projects are developed simultaneously.

Like a game of chess, every move on one side demands a countermove on the other.
