PRIMARY STRUCTURE 1/50 Garage du Moulin Location: Charleroi, Belgium,

The project starts from the question of what the future of parking garages might be when the car no longer plays a central role in the city. Rather than seeing these structures as remnants of the past, the project explores their potential for reuse.

As a case study, Garage du Moulin is examined a parking garage dating back to 1924, located in the centre of Charleroi, next to a small square and embedded in the urban fabric. The existing structure contains clear qualities, but also significant shortcomings.

By reusing and adapting the structure to contemporary standards, the character of the building is preserved. The old and the new merge into an architectural hybrid. By partially opening up the structure, the public realm is drawn into the building and translated into a cultural centre, where new interventions create pleasant circulation and new spatial experiences.
